Variegated Monstera has become a global obsession among houseplant lovers. Their oversized leaves, along with unique fenestrations and patterns, steal the spotlight in any plant collection.
Among all variegated varieties, Monstera Albo and Monstera Thai Constellation are often seen as the ultimate “must-have” plants for collectors worldwide.
At first glance, you may find they look similar, but these two Monstera differ greatly in their origins, variegation patterns, and care needs. Understanding these differences can help you find your loved one and decide which one is the perfect green companion to bring home (or perhaps both).
Monstera Albo originated from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, which naturally occur as mutations of Monstera deliciosa. Its variegation happens randomly and is not genetically stable, which is a key characteristic of chimeral variegation. Because of this, Albo plants are typically propagated through stem cuttings rather than seeds.

This natural and unpredictable origin contributes to the plant’s rarity and high value in the collector market. A commonly known trade example of Monstera Albo is Monstera Albo Holland.

Thai Constellation, which originated from Thailand, was developed through tissue culture in a laboratory environment. The goal was to create a Monstera with stable and consistent variegation, making it more reliable for large-scale production.
Unlike Albo, Thai Constellation’s variegation is embedded in its genetics, allowing it to maintain its pattern as it matures.

Because the white areas lack chlorophyll, heavy variegation can slow growth and make the plant more fragile.

Thai Constellation’s variegation is generally considered more balanced and less stressful for the plant.
Monstera Albo requires close attention. It thrives in bright, indirect light, but too much direct sun can scorch the white areas. Growth is slower, and improper watering can easily lead to root rot or leaf damage. There is also a risk of reversion, where new leaves grow fully green.
Thai Constellation is more forgiving. It also prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates minor mistakes better than Albo. Its stable variegation and stronger leaf structure make it a popular choice for collectors who want a striking plant without constant worry.
Finally, the choice between Monstera Albo and Thai Constellation comes down to your lifestyle and confidence in plant care. Whether you are drawn to the rare, unpredictable beauty of Albo or the stable elegance of Thai Constellation, both are guaranteed to bring character and charm to your collection. And if choosing just one feels too difficult, we would say—why not have both? ><
