“Thailand is a land of plenty of rice fields.” Everyone might be familiar with this phrase, right? The reason why Thailand has received this nickname for many consecutive years until now must go back to the time when Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province was the capital. At that time, Thailand was the biggest exporter of agricultural products, including rice, pepper, spices, and other products derived from Thai trees such as agarwood, turpentine, and lacquer varnish. These are because Thailand has a wide variety of arable land, including crops, horticulture, and forests.
In addition, our country has many geographical conditions, such as high mountains and plains between the northern mountains, which are suitable for crop rotation, step farming, and tea planting. The Northeastern (Northeastern Region) is suitable for growing sugarcane and cassava, although they are in more drought than other regions. However, it is unbelievable that the Northeastern region is famous for growing jasmine rice, which is exported all over the world. The central region is a lowland area. It is suitable for planting almost all species of Thai plants and trees because of both plentiful soil and water. The southern region is the coastal area. The soil is sandy and rainy, so it is suitable for coconut and oil palm planting.
Another essential factor in planting trees is water. Fortunately, Thailand has many rivers flowing through, including the Ping, the Wang, the Yom, the Nan, the Khong, and the Tapi. Especially the central region adjacent to the significant river like the Chao Phraya River has no shortage of water. The southern part has coastal areas in almost every province, both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman coast. Moreover, many people may not know that the sea of Bangkok is not only Siam Park, but Bangkok also has the actual sea, which is in Bang Khun Thian District. It is the only district in Bangkok that borders the Gulf of Thailand and has mangrove forests. These are why we can find mangroves and Avicennia trees here.
Temperature is another important factor in tree growth, fruiting and rooting. With the location of Thailand near the equator, Monsoon winds blow through some areas causing a hot and humid climate. There are summer, rainy, and winter, with an average temperature of 19-38 degrees Celsius. This moderate temperature also allows many insects in Thailand to come out to help pollinate.
Other species of trees from other countries can be grown in Thailand. If you have tried to visit Thailand, you will see a large Chamchuri tree sprawling along the roadside. Some people may understand that this is a tree of Thailand, but the fact is that this tree has come a long way from Australia, which has been in our home for a very long time. Winter fruits such as strawberries and avocados are also grown well in northern Thailand.
