Let’s start with the origin of the Nepenthes first. Nepenthes is an ancient plant since the Greek period. The name Nepenthes comes from the word ‘ne’ meaning ‘not’ and ‘penthes’ meaning ‘sorrow’. Therefore, it means that there is no suffering. Besides, it is the ancient Greek liquor decanter name. Thai people call Nepenthes “Morr Khao Morr Kaeng Ling” because monkeys like to drink the water of this plant when it rains.

Nepenthes is a unique plant. With the ability to trap insects, people like to plant it for decorating their homes. Unlike other plants, this carnivorous plant does not have leaves because it has adapted its leaves to become fragile like a pot and lures insects with vibrant colors like burgundy or pinkish red. When the insects come close, they will be seduced by Nepenthes nectar glands and stepped on the coated wax on the inside of the pot. Then, they fall and will be digested by the enzyme produced by the Nepenthes in order to use the nutrients that have been obtained.

Nepenthes are divided into two main groups which are

  1. Lowland Group There are about 40 species in this group. Found in landscapes that are at sea level from 0-1,000 meters. Most of them can be found in Southeast Asian countries because they like hot and humid conditions making them able to grow effectively, especially in Thailand.
  2.  Highland group There are about 60 species in this group. Found in landscapes that are at sea level from 1,000 meters or more because they are a group of plants that like a cool climate. Plus, the size of the pot is larger than the Loland group.
